The Island That Wasn’t There

Scene 1

The Corner That Woke Up

The northern stones still shone behind them as Boba, Fantu, and Laila gathered around the glowing map. Seven corners blazed like little suns. Only one corner remained black.

Boba tapped it with one careful paw. “Come on, mysterious corner. We have been very brave, very clever, and extremely hungry.”

Fantu leaned closer. “You are still hungry.” Laila studied the tiny marks around the darkness. “This is not a missing piece,” she said. “It is a path that has not decided to appear yet.”

At once, the black corner flickered. A silver line crawled across the map toward the great lake. “It knows where to go,” whispered Boba. “Then we follow,” said Laila.

Scene 2

A Clue in the Reeds

At the lake shore, the silver line stopped at a ring of old reeds. Laila lifted her head and tasted the breeze. “These reeds grow only where the water hides something underneath.”

Boba peered through them. “I see mud. I see a frog. I see more mud.” The frog blinked at him. Fantu made a polite trumpet. “Perhaps the mud is keeping a secret.”

Laila slid between the reeds and found three stones marked with a paw, a trunk, and a snake’s tail. “The jungle remembers our paths,” she said.

When all three friends touched their marks, the lake gave a low, hollow sound: HOOOONNNG. A cold wind rushed through the reeds and swept toward the mist.

Scene 3

The Island That Wasn’t There

The wind grew stronger. It caught the green mist in long silver ribbons and pulled it apart, layer by layer, until the dark lake opened before them.

Behind the last curtain of fog, an enormous island appeared. Jagged black cliffs climbed toward the sky, tangled with thorny vines, crooked trees, and the shadow of something ancient.

Boba’s tail puffed up. “That island was definitely not there a moment ago.” Fantu nodded slowly. “I checked. I am excellent at noticing enormous islands.”

The map blazed in Boba’s paws. Its final dark corner filled with deep green light, and a pale path appeared across the lake. Laila watched the mist race away. “The island was hidden,” she whispered. “Now it wants to be found.”

Scene 4

Across the Whispering Water

They stepped onto the shining path. It was firm beneath their feet, but the lake whispered from both sides. Boba heard his name in the water: “Booooba… turn back…”

“That is a very rude lake,” he said, walking faster. Fantu’s ears flapped. “It also called me ‘Faaantuuu.’ I did not like its singing voice.”

A wave snapped across the path and made Boba jump. He wanted to race ahead, but Laila caught his eye. “Slow feet see safe places,” she said.

So Boba took a breath. Paw, trunk, and tail stayed together as they crossed the whispering water—one careful step at a time.

Scene 5

The Forest with No Birds

The moonlit path vanished behind them as soon as they reached shore. The island forest was still. No birds called. No monkeys chattered. Even the leaves seemed afraid to rustle.

Fantu lowered his voice. “I miss the rude lake.” Boba tried to laugh, but it came out as a squeak. “Me too. It had personality.”

Laila followed a trail of pale stones through the roots. “This island was once part of the old jungle,” she said. “My grandmother warned of a place where paths change when no one is looking.”

Behind them, the trees creaked and leaned together, closing the way back.

Scene 6

Eyes in the Dark

Something clicked in the branches. Then something else clicked back. Round yellow eyes opened between the roots—one pair, then ten, then more than Boba could count.

“Good evening,” Boba called bravely. “We are visitors who would prefer not to be eaten.” The eyes blinked. A tiny creature squeaked, and every pair vanished.

Fantu noticed the map had changed. A thin line led to a hill crowned with broken stone. “That looks temple-shaped,” he said. “Or very grumpy-rock-shaped.”

Laila’s markings darkened. “There should be no temple on this island.” A deep drumbeat rolled through the forest: DUM. DUM. DUM.

Scene 7

The Bridge of Bones

A ravine opened before them. Across it lay a bridge made from enormous white bones, tied together with black vines. Far below, water thrashed against unseen rocks.

Boba sprang onto the first bone. It tipped. “I have made a very fast decision,” he yelped. “And I would like to unmake it!”

Fantu wrapped his trunk around a tree root and held Boba steady. Laila found small carvings on the bones: paw, trunk, tail—again and again.

“Not one at a time,” she said. They crossed together, balancing each other. When the last of them reached the far side, the bridge crumbled silently behind them.

Scene 8

The Temple Door

At the top of the hill stood an old temple, half swallowed by roots. Its stone steps were cracked. Its tall doorway was carved with claw marks and coiling scales.

The map glowed warm against Boba’s chest, then pointed straight at the door. “This is where the missing path ends,” he said. For once, he did not sound excited.

Fantu touched the door with his trunk. The stone was warm. From inside came a scraping sound, slow and heavy, like claws dragging across rock.

Laila looked at the marks. “Someone lives here,” she whispered. The door opened by itself.

Scene 9

Kaal’s Shadow

Inside, crooked torches burned with green flame. Strange treasures covered the floor: broken cages, cloudy crystals, feathers, and maps with their corners torn away.

A shape moved beyond the torches. It was long and low, with muddy black scales, hooked claws, and a ragged mane of mossy fur. Its tail dragged across the floor with a hiss.

Boba pressed close to Fantu. “Is that a snake?” Fantu whispered back, “It has claws.” Laila’s eyes did not leave the creature. “And it is much worse than a snake.”

The creature lifted its horned head. Amber eyes gleamed in the dark. “So,” it rasped, “the little map-bearers have found my island.”

Scene 10

A Promise in the Dark

The creature slid nearer. “I am Kaal,” it said. “This temple, this island, every dark path beneath the jungle belongs to me.”

The complete map flared in Boba’s paws. Kaal reached for it, but Laila snapped, “It belongs to no one.” Fantu stamped once, hard enough to shake dust from the ceiling.

Boba was frightened. His knees were doing their secret wobble. But he held the map tight. “We came to find a path,” he said. “And we are going to find a way home.”

Kaal smiled, showing many sharp teeth. Behind him, a hidden tunnel yawned open toward the dark. “Then run, little travelers,” he hissed. “I have been waiting for you.”
